The creators of the wildly popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, have come to its defense in light of recent concerns about the potential dangers it poses to society. In a blog post published on Wednesday, OpenAI acknowledged the “real risks” associated with their technology but emphasized that their artificial intelligence systems undergo “rigorous safety evaluations” to mitigate potential issues.<\/p>\n
The AI giant revealed that their latest GPT-4 model underwent six months of safety testing before it was released to the public, showcasing their commitment to responsible AI development.<\/p>\n
OpenAI also took the opportunity to call for greater regulation within the AI industry to ensure safety standards are followed by all players. The company recognizes that despite tighter regulations and safety testing, predicting all the ways people may misuse the technology remains a challenge. OpenAI stated in their blog post, “We will be increasingly cautious with the creation and deployment of more capable models, and will continue to enhance safety precautions as our AI systems evolve.”<\/p>\n
The blog post comes a week after over 1,000 experts called for AI development to be paused until the full risks can be properly understood. They urged that if such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium. OpenAI expressed its willingness to contribute to these discussions and is “actively engaging with governments on the best form such regulation could take.”<\/p>\n
OpenAI also addressed recent accusations surrounding its collection of user data. Italy became the first Western country last week to ban ChatGPT due to privacy concerns, and other European countries, including Germany and Ireland, are reportedly considering similar bans. These nations are currently in conversation with Italy\u2019s data protection agency.<\/p>\n
The company stated in their blog post, “While some of our training data includes personal information that is available on the public internet, we want our models to learn about the world, not private individuals.” OpenAI further explained that they work to remove personal information from their training dataset where feasible, fine-tune models to reject requests for personal information of private individuals, and respond to requests from individuals to delete their personal information from their systems.<\/p>\n
